Zendesk vs Freshdesk 2026: Price per Agent and AI Costs

Freshdesk is the cheaper pick for most small support teams in 2026; Zendesk is worth its premium when you want AI agents that bill only on success and the deeper Suite Professional toolset. Both start at $19 per agent a month billed yearly, and their middle plans match at $55. The gap opens at the top: Freshdesk Enterprise is $89 against $115 for Zendesk Suite Professional, and Freddy AI Copilot costs $29 per agent against Zendesk Copilot's $50.

Prices were read on 19 October 2026 on Zendesk's US pricing page and Freshdesk's pricing page, with AI metering rules from Zendesk's help center articles on automated resolutions and resolution tiers.

Toolradar data: of the 283 customer support tools Toolradar tracks as of 18 October 2026, Zendesk is the most cross-shopped, listed as an alternative to 103 other tools, and Freshdesk ranks third at 83. Those two names come up in more buying shortlists than almost anything else in the category.

How much does Zendesk cost compared with Freshdesk?

At the bottom and middle of the range the two vendors charge the same seat price, so the decision there is about what each plan includes. Zendesk Support Team and Freshdesk Growth both cover email ticketing, routing and analytics. Freshdesk Growth adds a customer portal and knowledge base; on Zendesk the step up to Suite Team is what brings an AI knowledge base, messaging, live chat and telephony.

The middle tier is where the plans diverge in spirit. Zendesk Suite Team is the omnichannel plan: messaging, live chat, voice and omnichannel routing under one seat. Freshdesk Pro spends the same seat price on helpdesk depth instead: a multilingual helpdesk, custom dashboards, intelligent routing, multiple SLA policies and external collaborators. A team that answers mostly by email gets more from Pro; a team juggling chat and phone gets more from Suite Team, and should price the phone side with our business phone system pricing comparison.

At the top, Freshdesk is cheaper by $26 per agent a month. Freshdesk Enterprise brings skill-based routing, a sandbox, audit logs and IP allowlisting. Zendesk Suite Professional brings skills-based routing too, plus an IVR phone tree, admin and writing AI tools, and quick reports. The extra cost buys voice features and Zendesk's AI tooling rather than core ticketing.

Billing flexibility favors Zendesk on paper, because it prints a month-to-month price for every self-serve plan. Freshdesk lists its yearly prices with a 20% saving for annual billing, so compare yearly with yearly, and check the current monthly rate on Freshworks' site before choosing month to month. The full Zendesk plan list, including Support Team on monthly billing, is in our Zendesk pricing breakdown, and the monthly SaaS pricing changes tracker is where we log price moves across business software.

How do the AI costs compare?

AI is where the two bills stop looking alike, because the vendors meter different things.

Zendesk charges per automated resolution, a customer request its AI agent closes without a human. The plan comparison table, read on 19 October 2026, includes 5 resolutions per agent a month on Support Team and Suite Team and 10 on Suite Professional, capped at 10,000 a year. Above that, a resolution costs $1.50 when bought in advance and $2.00 billed as used. Since 18 May 2026, Zendesk's resolution tiers bill only verified resolutions, ones a language model confirms solved the request; escalations and conversations that merely end without a complaint do not draw on the allowance.

Freshdesk charges per session, a unique interaction between a customer and Freddy AI Agent, whatever the outcome. An email session is a 72-hour window from the customer's first email. Every paid plan gets 500 free sessions, but Freshdesk's FAQ says that is a one-time allowance per account, not monthly. After it runs out, sessions cost $49 per 100, and packs expire with your billing cycle.

The difference matters more than the unit prices suggest. Zendesk's $1.50 per resolution is higher than Freshdesk's 49 cents per session, but a Freshdesk session is billed even when the AI fails and hands the customer to a person. If your AI agent resolves only a minority of conversations, Zendesk's success-based meter is the cheaper one per problem solved. If it resolves most of them, Freshdesk's flat session price wins.

Agent-side AI is simpler. Zendesk Copilot is a $50 per agent add-on available from Suite Professional upward. Freddy AI Copilot is $29 per agent on Pro or Enterprise, can be assigned to only some agents, and has no day pass. What a 10-agent team pays per year

Techpresso calculation: yearly bills for 10 agents, from the vendors' printed per-agent prices billed yearly. The AI-heavy rows use a scenario of 300 AI conversations a month, all of them resolved, so each counts once on both meters.

Setup Zendesk, per year Freshdesk, per year
Entry plan, no AI extras $2,280 (Support Team) $2,280 (Growth)
Mid plan, no AI extras $6,600 (Suite Team) $6,600 (Pro)
Top self-serve plan, no AI extras $13,800 (Suite Professional) $10,680 (Enterprise)
Mid plan plus 300 AI conversations a month $11,100 $8,119 in year one
Top plan plus Copilot for all 10 and 300 AI conversations a month $23,400 $15,679 in year one

How the AI rows add up. Zendesk Suite Team includes 600 resolutions a year for 10 agents, so 3,600 conversations leave 3,000 to buy at $1.50 ($4,500). Suite Professional includes 1,200, leaving 2,400 ($3,600), and Copilot adds $6,000. Freshdesk's one-time 500 free sessions leave 3,100 in year one, or 31 packs at $49 ($1,519), and Freddy Copilot adds $3,480. From year two Freshdesk pays for all 3,600 sessions, $1,764.

Two caveats change the picture. If only half of those 300 conversations were resolved, Zendesk would bill 150 a month while Freshdesk still bills 300 sessions. And Zendesk's pay-as-you-go rate of $2.00 would add $1,500 a year to the mid-plan Zendesk row. Even so, Freshdesk costs less in every row of this table, by about a third once Copilot is in the mix.

Zendesk strengths and weaknesses

Strengths. Zendesk bills AI on outcomes, which protects a team whose bot is still learning. Suite plans put messaging, chat, voice and omnichannel routing under one seat from Suite Team. Every self-serve plan has a printed monthly price, useful for a team that cannot commit for a year.

Weaknesses. Suite Professional is the most expensive self-serve seat in this comparison, and Copilot is a second per-agent fee on top of it, which is why the AI-heavy Zendesk setup is the most expensive line in the 10-agent table. The included allowance is small, 5 or 10 resolutions per agent a month, so a busy AI agent goes into paid resolutions within days. Enterprise is sold only through sales.

Freshdesk strengths and weaknesses

Strengths. The top self-serve plan costs $26 less per agent than Zendesk's, and Freddy Copilot costs $21 less per agent. Pro packs SLA policies, multilingual support and custom dashboards into the mid-tier price that buys omnichannel on Zendesk. Day passes ($2 on Growth, $7 on Pro, $12 on Enterprise) let occasional agents work without a full seat.

Weaknesses. The 500 free AI sessions are a one-time trial allowance, not a monthly grant, and every later session is billed whether or not the AI resolved it. Copilot is not available on Growth. Its pricing leads with yearly rates, so a buyer who wants to pay month to month has one more number to confirm. Our Freshdesk review covers the plan features in more depth.

Which should you choose?

Choose Freshdesk if your team works mostly by email, wants SLA policies and multilingual support at the mid tier, or plans to put Copilot on every seat: the yearly bill is lower at every level we priced. Choose Zendesk if chat and phone are core channels (our guide on how to choose a business phone system helps with the voice side), if you want AI agents billed only when they solve a problem, or if you need month-to-month billing. Teams under five agents with simple email support should also look at the Help Scout review, and the four-way help desk software pricing comparison prices Intercom alongside both. If live chat with AI is the priority, our Intercom pricing page covers the per-resolution model there.

Methodology

Plan prices, add-ons, trials and AI allowances were read on 19 October 2026 on Zendesk's US pricing page, including its plan comparison table and FAQ, and on Freshdesk's pricing page and FAQ, both showing US dollars. Zendesk's resolution rules come from its help center articles linked above. The 10-agent table multiplies the printed yearly per-agent prices by 10 agents and 12 months and applies each vendor's printed AI rates, rounded to the dollar; the 300-conversation volume is a scenario, not a vendor figure. Toolradar figures come from its customer support statistics page on 18 October 2026.
