TL;DR

For five agents who answer email and live chat, Zoho Desk Standard is the cheapest Zendesk alternative on a vendor price page: $14 per agent a month billed yearly, or $70 a month for the team. LiveAgent Team ($29), Help Scout Standard and Hiver Growth also undercut Zendesk Suite Team, which costs $55 per agent a month billed yearly, or $275 a month for five agents.

For email-only support, Zendesk Support Team is already cheap; only Zoho Desk Express ($7), LiveAgent Starter ($15) and the free plans of Zoho Desk and Help Scout beat it. Prices were read on each vendor's pricing page on 19 October 2026.

Zendesk is the help desk most teams price first, and the one most of them try to leave when the renewal lands. The jump that hurts is from Support Team, an email ticketing plan, to Suite Team, the plan that adds messaging, live chat and AI agents: the seat price nearly triples. Every tool below was priced on 19 October 2026 for one scenario: five agents, email plus live chat, yearly billing at list price. Our Zendesk pricing guide covers Zendesk's own plans in detail; this page is about what to switch to.

Toolradar data: Zendesk is listed as an alternative to 103 other tools on Toolradar, the software directory we run, ranking #1 of the 28 tools in its help desk ranking as of October 2026. No help desk is cross-shopped more, which is why so many vendors below build their pitch around replacing it.

What it is

Cheaper here means a lower monthly bill for a stated team and channel mix, not a lower sticker price. Zendesk's entry seat looks cheap, but Support Team covers email ticketing only. A team that wants a chat widget on its website has to buy Suite Team, and that is the number every alternative is measured against.

The scenario fits a small SaaS or ecommerce support team: five agents, one shared email queue, a chat widget and a help center. A tool only counts as a fit for the chat scenario if the plan priced includes live chat for website visitors. Teams that only answer email should look at the email-only column in the pricing table, where the comparison is with Support Team instead.

Why it matters

Live chat is where the bill splits. Zendesk keeps messaging and live chat out of Support Team, and so do several rivals at their entry tier: Freshdesk Growth is email-led, Front Starter is single-channel, and Zoho Desk's Standard chat covers logged-in customers, with full website chat on Enterprise. LiveAgent Starter, Help Scout Standard and Hiver Growth include website chat at their entry paid price.

Seat caps and minimums move the bill too. LiveAgent Starter stops at 5 agents and Team at 15, Front Starter at 10 seats, while Deskpro requires at least 5 agents on Team, so a growing team should price the tier it will need next year, not only today's. AI is the third meter: Zendesk AI agents arrive with Suite Team, Freshdesk includes 500 AI agent sessions on every plan, and Help Scout charges $0.75 per AI Answers resolution.

Key features to look for

Seat math
Multiply the yearly per-agent price by five. Zendesk Suite Team becomes $275 a month for five agents; Zoho Desk Standard becomes $70 and LiveAgent Team $145.
Live chat access
LiveAgent Starter, Help Scout Standard and Hiver Growth include website live chat at their entry paid plan. Zendesk needs Suite Team, Front needs Professional, and Zoho Desk adds full website chat on Enterprise.
Seat caps and minimums
LiveAgent Starter allows up to 5 agents and Team up to 15. Front Starter allows up to 10 seats. Deskpro Team requires a minimum of 5 agents.
Free plans
Zoho Desk Free covers 3 users with email ticketing and Help Scout Free covers 5 users, 1 inbox and 1 Docs site. Zendesk, Freshdesk, LiveAgent, Hiver, Front and Deskpro publish no free plan on their pricing pages.
AI pricing
Freshdesk includes 500 AI agent sessions on every plan, then $49 per 100. Help Scout charges $0.75 per AI Answers resolution with a spending cap. Zoho Desk lets you bring your own model key.

Pricing

Methodology. We priced five agents handling email and website live chat on yearly billing, at list price, for every vendor that publishes a per-agent price on its own pricing page. Team totals are the yearly per-agent price times five, per month. Deskpro does not show a billing toggle, so its listed per-agent rate is used as shown. Techpresso runs no test lab, so nothing here is a hands-on result.

Checked on vendor pages on 19 October 2026: Zendesk, Zoho Desk, LiveAgent, Help Scout, Hiver, Deskpro, Freshdesk and Front. Toolradar keeps dated profiles of Zendesk, Zoho Desk, Help Scout, LiveAgent, Hiver and Freshdesk.

Where Zendesk's bill starts: Support Team is $19 per agent a month billed yearly for email ticketing, routing, macros and prebuilt dashboards. Suite Team is $55 billed yearly ($69 monthly) and adds AI agents, messaging and live chat, omnichannel routing and telephony. Suite Professional is $115 billed yearly ($149 monthly). Copilot is a $50 per agent add-on, and Zendesk advertises 20% off for annual billing.

Mistakes to avoid
×Comparing every rival with Zendesk Support Team. That plan has no live chat, so a chat team's real Zendesk bill is Suite Team at $275 a month for five agents.
×Assuming the entry plan includes website chat. Front Starter is single-channel and Zoho Desk's full website chat sits on Enterprise; check the channel list, not the plan name.
×Ignoring seat caps. LiveAgent Starter stops at 5 agents and Front Starter at 10, so a growing team can be forced up a tier mid-contract.
×Paying monthly. Hiver's monthly seat is $10 higher on every plan, and Zendesk advertises 20% off for yearly billing.
Expert tips
→Price AI separately from seats. Freshdesk includes 500 AI agent sessions, Help Scout bills per resolution with a cap, and Zendesk AI agents start with Suite Team.
→Use the free plans as the trial. Zoho Desk Free covers 3 users and Help Scout Free 5 users, enough to run a real queue at $0 before you migrate.
→Ask about migration help. Zoho Desk advertises free switching help from other help desks, which lowers the hidden cost of leaving Zendesk.

The bottom line

For five agents on email and live chat, start with Zoho Desk Standard at $70 a month if chat for logged-in customers and messaging apps cover your channels. Move to LiveAgent Team when you want website chat, social channels and a call center for about half the Zendesk seat, or Help Scout Standard or Hiver Growth for a cleaner shared-inbox workflow at $125 a month. Pick Deskpro for a unified inbox at five agents or more, and Freshdesk when an included AI agent matters more than the seat price. Choose Front only for email-only teams of up to 10. Stay on Zendesk when you depend on its marketplace, Suite Professional's AI admin tools or a contract you cannot exit before renewal.
