Slack Review 2026: Pricing, Pros, Cons and Alternatives
What 10 and 25 active users pay on Pro, Business+, and Enterprise+, beside Teams, Chat, Zoom, and Mattermost.
Slack is worth Pro when chat is the product and you are not already paying for a suite that includes it. Ten active users on annual Pro come to $870 a year. Business+ is the tier that adds SAML single sign-on, so budget that step when an identity provider is required. A team on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace should price Teams or Chat before it pays for a second chat bill.
The free plan keeps search to 90 days and 10 apps, enough to try Slack and too short for a company archive. Ongoing Slackbot sits on Business+ and Enterprise+, so the first paid plan is history and channels, not the agent. Mattermost publishes no seat price, and Zoom's chat seat costs more than Pro if chat is all you wanted.
Key factsBest for: Teams that want chat as the product and can wait on SAML…
- Dedicated team chat, billed for people who were active in the last 28 days.
- Free search window: Messages age out of search on the free plan
- Who is billed: Members who act inside the activity window
- SAML single sign-on: Starts on Business+, not on Pro
- Tools tracked: 41 in the team chat directory
Pros
- Pro removes the free history cap, which is the limit that makes Free a demo
- Paid Slack Connect covers channels with up to 250 outside organizations
- Paid plans keep message data for life by default, while Free deletes it after 1 year
Cons
- SAML starts on Business+, and one workspace is the limit until Enterprise+
- Ongoing Slackbot is Business+ and Enterprise+; Free and Pro get a limited trial

Most of the Slack bill is a second chat product sitting on top of email you already pay for. Buy Pro when channels, search, and outside companies are the system of record, and stay on the suite when chat is not that system.
This page prices every Slack tier for a smaller team and a larger one beside Microsoft Teams, Google Chat, Zoom Workplace, and Mattermost. Our methodology is a read of each vendor's pricing page in October 2026. The seat math is done here, and this is not a product test.
Toolradar data: the team chat directory we run tracked 41 tools as of October 16, 2026, and 76% of them are free, freemium, or open source. Slack is listed as an alternative on 55 other pages in that set.
Discord and Microsoft Teams lead that cross-shop, at 59 pages each. The profiles for Slack and Microsoft Teams are on Toolradar.
What is Slack?
Slack is team chat: channels, direct messages, huddles, canvases, lists, and an app directory of more than 2,600 apps. The free plan is a short search window and a small app cap, not a smaller copy of the paid archive.
Huddles and Slack Connect on that plan are one-to-one only, so a free workspace cannot host the group calls or vendor channels a company needs.
Paid plans remove both caps and open group huddles plus channels with outside organizations, up to 250 of them. Canvases and lists sit beside the chat for notes and tracking, which suits a team that already lives here.
They do not replace a wiki or a project board, so read the Notion review and the project management roundup before you treat Slack as that system.
Enterprise+ is the plan with unlimited workspaces, multi-SAML, and enterprise search across connected apps, while Free, Pro, and Business+ each allow one workspace. A separate workspace per division means the top tier, and the self-serve plans will not get you there.
How Slack works
You are billed for members who act inside a 28-day window, not for every invited account. A company of 25 people with 10 people who post is billed only for the people who posted. A quiet account you leave active is a seat you did not mean to buy.
New members pay a prorated amount for the rest of the period, and someone who goes inactive draws a prorated credit.
Monthly plans renew on the monthly date, and annual plans renew on the annual date, with added members charged at the end of the month. Self-serve invoices need annual billing, at least 3 active members, and at least 58 members on Pro or 28 on Business+, plus a remittance fee. Both team sizes on this page miss that roster, so they pay by card.
Slackbot, the personal agent, is a limited trial on Free and Pro, and ongoing access is on Business+ and Enterprise+. The trial is not a reason to buy the first paid plan. Slack says its AI features run in its own AWS environment, customer data is not shared with model providers, and customer data is not used to train those models.
Slack key features
Slack pricing
Slack lists four plans, and the free one is $0. Pro is $7.25 per user a month billed annually, or $8.75 billed monthly. Business+ is $15 per user a month billed annually, or $18 billed monthly. Enterprise+ is $45 per user a month billed annually, and the buy button is contact sales, so that tier is not a card purchase.
A 50% discount for the first 3 months applies to monthly Pro and Business+, shown as $4.38 and $9, and it skips annual plans and Enterprise+. Treat that rate as a trial discount, not the price you will live with, because the full monthly rate returns when it ends.
The smaller team on annual Pro comes to $870 a year. The same headcount on monthly billing comes to $1,050 a year, which is $180 more. Those users pay $131.40 for the first 3 months at the introductory rate, then the full monthly rate returns. Budget the annual total unless the team will leave before that discount ends.
The same smaller team on annual Business+ comes to $1,800 a year, and Enterprise+ comes to $5,400 a year. Pay Enterprise+ only when you need more than one workspace. Twenty-five on annual Pro come to $2,175 a year, and that headcount on annual Business+ comes to $4,500 a year.
The jump buys SAML, SCIM, channel posting controls, a 4-hour first response, and ongoing Slackbot, while Pro support is 24/7 without that target.
Microsoft 365 Business Basic is $7.00 per user a month paid yearly and includes Teams, large meetings, 1 TB per user, and a user cap. The smaller team is $840 a year, close to Slack Pro, and it buys the suite rather than chat alone.
Microsoft's July 1, 2026 price list puts Business Basic without Teams at $5.40, a gap of $1.60 a user for including Teams. At that headcount the gap is $192 a year, the real price of keeping Teams instead of adding Slack.
Teams Premium is an extra $10.00 per user a month paid yearly, so the suite stops being the cheaper chat option once you need the add-on. A converted free Teams account cannot return to free on the same email, so the unpaid plan is a one-way door.
Google Chat has no plan of its own, so the seat is the whole Workspace bill. On an annual commitment, which Workspace says saves 16% and bills monthly, Business Starter is $7 per user a month, and the smaller team is $840 a year.
New customers see $4.90 per user a month for the first 20 users for 12 months. Those seats are $588 in year one, then the standard rate, which is the figure if you are new to Workspace.
Chat is on every plan, including Starter, which also includes 30 GB of pooled storage per user and Meet at the listed group size. Gemini in Chat is not on Starter, and it starts on Standard at $14 per user a month on that commitment, while Plus is $22.
Starter, Standard, and Plus share a user cap, so a company past that cap cannot stay on these three plans.
Zoom Workplace bundles meetings, chat, mail, and calendar, and Basic is free, with instant messaging and meetings capped at 40 minutes plus a participant limit. Pro is $14.16 per user a month billed annually, so the smaller team is $1,699.20 a year, a meeting product priced above a chat-only Pro bill.
Business is $18.33 per user a month billed annually, where single sign-on, managed domains, and larger meetings show up, and Enterprise is contact sales.
Mattermost lists Professional, Enterprise, and Enterprise Advanced with no seat price, so you cannot compare it until sales sends a quote. Licenses are prepaid annual seats, Cloud Enterprise is a sales conversation, and a Free edition exists for teams evaluating a purchase.
Self-hosted group calls on one server go to about 50 concurrent users, which matters if the call is why you would leave.
Our Slack vs Microsoft Teams piece prices the two-product matchup, and Google Workspace vs Microsoft 365 prices the suites those chats ride on.
The team chat roundup ranks the category, and free Slack alternatives covers the plans that cost nothing.
Prices were checked in October 2026 on Slack pricing and Slack payment methods, plus Microsoft 365 Business Basic and Microsoft's July 2026 price list.
The same check covered Microsoft Teams plans, Google Workspace pricing, Zoom Workplace pricing, and Mattermost pricing.
Yearly totals are those rates times seats times 12, and how we rate is on the method page.

Who Slack is for
Slack Pro fits a tech or ops team of about 25 active people, or a smaller group, that searches the archive and talks to vendors in shared channels. That team needs Google or password sign-in, because any other identity provider waits on a higher tier.
Business+ is the buy when an identity provider, SCIM, or ongoing Slackbot is required, rather than a nice extra. Enterprise+ is the buy for more than one workspace, and a single-workspace company can skip it.
Skip Slack when you already pay for Microsoft 365 and chat is not worth a second bill. Start with the Teams comparison above, and the video pricing comparison if meetings are the real product.
Skip it when you live in Gmail and Drive, since Chat is already invoiced, or when the group is a community rather than a company archive.
Read free alternatives before you pay to escape the free search window, and use the integrations guide and the Zapier review for apps that post into channels.
Best Slack alternatives
If Slack is not the right fit, these are the closest options.

| Mattermost | Teams that will self-host and can accept a quote instead of a list price. | No public seat price | Visit → |
The bottom line
Pay for Slack Pro when a small group needs the archive, the apps, and outside channels, and when SAML can wait. That annual Pro total is the figure to set beside a suite you may already own. Business+ is a different purchase: identity, admin controls, and Slackbot that does not expire with the trial.
Enterprise+ is the multi-workspace price, several times the Pro bill, so skip it when one workspace is enough.
Choose Teams when Microsoft 365 is already the invoice, Google Chat when Workspace is, and Zoom when meetings are why you pay and chat can come along. Choose Mattermost when messages must live on your servers and a quote is acceptable.
