It is built by Lucid Software, founded in South Jordan, Utah, in 2010, and now sold alongside the Lucidspark whiteboard and the Lucidscale cloud-visualization product as one Lucid subscription.

How we compared: every price below was read on each vendor's own pricing page in September or October 2026, and no vendor paid for a place in the piece. The six tools are direct diagramming products or diagramming-capable whiteboards, not generic drawing apps.

Lucidchart is a cloud-based diagramming tool for flowcharts, org charts, network diagrams, ER diagrams, wireframes and process maps, built and sold by Lucid Software. Documents live in the browser, with desktop and mobile apps too, and sync in real time across a team.

They can also pull live data from a spreadsheet or database, so a shape's color or label updates automatically when the source data changes.

What separates it from a plain drawing tool is that data-linking layer. Import an Excel or Google Sheets file, and Lucidchart can auto-generate an org chart or a network diagram from the rows. It then keeps shapes in sync on a schedule.

It also ships an AI-assisted diagram generator that turns a text prompt or an uploaded flowchart image into an editable diagram. Template and shape libraries cover AWS, Azure, GCP, UML and BPMN notation, alongside native integrations with Jira, Confluence, Slack, Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace.

You start a document from a blank canvas, a template, an imported Visio (.vsdx) file, or an AI prompt. From there you drag shapes onto the canvas, or let Lucidchart auto-generate a layout from imported data. Shapes snap to a grid, connector lines route themselves between boxes, and a floating toolbar handles formatting without leaving the canvas.

Real-time multiplayer editing keeps everyone's cursor and edits in sync, so a team can work the same document at once instead of passing a file back and forth.

Sharing works like a typical cloud document: invite by email, or share a link with view, comment or edit permissions. Enforceable Sharing Restrictions stop a document from being re-shared outside the account. Data linking is set up once, mapping spreadsheet columns to shape properties.

It then refreshes on the schedule you pick, rather than requiring a manual re-import every time the source changes. The free plan caps you at three editable documents and 75 shapes per document, which is workable for a single project but not for ongoing use.

Lucidchart, Miro, Whimsical and Creately all publish self-serve prices. Microsoft prices Visio per user with no free tier beyond a 30-day trial, and draw.io has no paid consumer tier at all. Lucidchart, Miro and Creately all hide their top plan behind a custom quote.

Lucidchart and Creately's Enterprise tiers, plus Miro's Enterprise, each require a minimum seat count or a sales call to get a number.

Lucidchart's free plan gives three editable documents and 75 shapes per document, verified on Lucidchart's pricing page in October 2026. Individual and Team remove those caps at the per-seat rates in the pricing table below.

Enterprise is a custom quote with Enterprise Shield and a dedicated Cloud Accelerator add-on. draw.io stays free forever with no account required, which makes it the cheapest option on this list by definition.

Miro starts free at three boards, then Starter runs $8/month per member, with Business at $20/month per member, both billed yearly. A custom Enterprise tier follows, requiring at least 30 seats.

Microsoft Visio only sells subscriptions. Plan 1 covers the web and Teams apps at the lower per-user rate in the table, and Plan 2 triples that rate to add the desktop app and BPMN 2.0 support, both billed annually.

Whimsical charges a flat per-editor rate for Pro, with Business again roughly double, after a free tier capped at 50 board objects a month.

Creately is the cheapest paid entry here, with Starter and Team priced the same per seat, Business jumping sharply for unlimited users, and Enterprise as a custom quote.

Lucidchart earns its price for teams that diagram as a recurring part of the job. That includes IT and network teams keeping infrastructure maps current, product and engineering teams documenting architecture and ER diagrams, and ops teams running org charts and process maps that need to stay in sync with a live spreadsheet.

If your organization is already inside Atlassian or Microsoft 365, the Jira, Confluence and Teams integrations make it the path of least friction. Teams weighing it against a broader project management tool will find Lucidchart complements rather than replaces that layer.
