Best Website Builders for Small Business in 2026

Eight builders compared for a business of one to ten people: what the plan that takes payments costs, how many staff can edit, and what each card fee adds.

TL;DR

Short answer: Wix Core is the best default for a small service business, because booking and payments arrive on the same plan. Pick Squarespace if the brand look sells the work, Shopify if products are the business, and Square Online if you already take cards in person and want a $0 plan.

The three leaders land on the same bill: Wix Core, Squarespace Core and Shopify Basic each cost $348 a year on annual billing, checked on the vendors' pricing pages in October 2026. What separates them is who can edit the site and what you pay per sale.

  • Updated: October 26, 2026
  • Top pick: Wix (best for: Service businesses of one to ten people that need booking, payments and a site in one plan)
  • Top pick price as of October 26, 2026: Wix: From $17/mo billed yearly (Light); payments and booking from Core at $29/mo; free plan with Wix branding.
  • 8 tools compared: Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, Square Online, WordPress.com, Hostinger Website Builder, Webflow, Framer
  • Squarespace (best for: Design-led small businesses (studios, restaurants, boutiques) where the look of the site sells the work): From $19/mo billed yearly (Basic, 2% commerce fee); Core drops the fee to 0%; 14-day free trial.
  • Shopify (best for: Small businesses where selling products online is the main job, not a side page): From $29/mo billed yearly (Basic); 3 days free, then $1/mo for 3 months.
  • Square Online (best for: Cafes, restaurants and shops that already take cards in person with Square): Free plan; Plus is $49/mo per location, Premium $149/mo; online cards 3.3% + 30 cents on Free.

A small business does not need the most powerful builder. It needs the one that matches what the site has to do on a Tuesday: take a booking, sell a product, or let three staff update the opening hours without breaking the layout. Pick on that job, then on the plan that covers it, and only then on the sticker price.

Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, tracks 204 website builders as of 17 October 2026. 63% of them are free, freemium or open source, and the median cheapest paid plan is $14 a month across the 76 that publish one. Most small businesses still end up paying about twice that median, because the cheapest tier rarely accepts payments.

Pricing
From $19/mo billed yearly (Basic, 2% commerce fee); Core drops the fee to 0%; 14-day free trial.

  • 14-day trial with no card, then a free custom domain on annual plans

Cons

  • Basic caps contributors at 2 and charges 7% on memberships and courses
  • Monthly billing is far higher than annual: Core is $39 a month when paid monthly
3 Shopify logo

Pricing
From $29/mo billed yearly (Basic); 3 days free, then $1/mo for 3 months.

Cons

  • In-person card rates run from 2.6% plus 15 cents on Free down to 2.4% on Premium

Cons

5 WordPress.com logo

Pricing
From $4/mo billed yearly (Personal); Premium with payments $8/mo; free plan shows ads.

6 Hostinger Website Builder logo

  • 250 AI credits on Premium and 500 on Unlimited for AI page drafts

  • Renewal jumps to $10.99 a month on Premium and $16.99 on Unlimited
7 Webflow logo

Webflow

The designer's builder: precise layouts and a strong CMS, with a store priced as a separate plan.

Pricing
From $15/mo billed yearly (Basic, no CMS); Premium with CMS $25/mo; free Starter plan.

Best for: Small businesses with an in-house designer or agency who want full layout control

Pros

  • Basic includes 300 static pages, 10 GB bandwidth and unlimited form submissions
  • Premium adds the CMS, site search and 50 GB bandwidth for content-heavy sites
  • Webflow is listed as an alternative to 119 tools on Toolradar, the most in the category

Cons

  • Selling needs a separate store plan, and its Standard tier adds a per-sale fee and caps at 500 items
  • The editor assumes design skills; an owner updating hours alone will find it heavy
8 Framer logo

Framer

A fast way to a sharp marketing site, best for one or two editors since every extra editor is billed.

Pricing
From $10/mo billed yearly (Basic); Pro is $30/mo; extra editors $20/mo each; free plan.

Best for: Startups and agencies that need a polished marketing site fast and do not sell online

Pros

  • Basic includes 30 pages, 1,000 CMS items and 50 GB bandwidth
  • Content editors who only update CMS text cost $10 a month, half a full editor
  • Viewers who comment on pages are free

Cons

  • Five people editing on Basic adds $960 a year in design-editor seats
  • The pricing page lists no store plan, so product sellers need another tool

What it is

A website builder for small business is a hosted service that gives you templates, a visual editor, a domain and the hosting in one subscription, so a non-developer can publish and update the company site. The business plans add payments, booking, a store and staff seats, and that is where the price differences live.

Toolradar keeps profiles for Wix, Squarespace, Shopify and Webflow. The prices on this page come from each vendor's own pricing page, not from those profiles.

Why it matters

Company size changes the math in two places. The first is seats: a solo owner never notices that Squarespace Basic stops at two contributors or that Shopify Basic has no staff accounts, but a five-person shop does. The second is sales volume: a card fee that is trivial at ten orders a month becomes the biggest line on the bill at a few hundred.

Our cost model, built from the published rates: a store selling $36,000 a year online in $60 orders (600 orders) pays about $1,368 a year on Square Online Free (3.3% plus 30 cents per online card payment, no subscription) and about $1,572 on Shopify Basic (a lower card rate, plus the subscription). Square stays cheaper until roughly $87,000 a year in online card sales, the point where Shopify's 0.4-point lower rate pays for its plan. Past that, Shopify wins on fees and on store features.

Key features to look for

The first plan that takes money
Wix Light, Webflow Basic and WordPress.com Personal do not sell anything. Price the first tier that accepts payments or bookings, not the headline tier.
Staff seats
WordPress.com paid plans allow unlimited users and Squarespace Core unlimited contributors. Wix Core allows 5 collaborators, Shopify Grow 5 staff accounts, and Framer bills extra editors per month.
Transaction and card fees
Squarespace Basic and Webflow's Standard store plan each add a 2% fee per sale, and Square Online's free plan charges a higher card rate. At volume these outweigh the subscription.
Intro pricing and renewals
Hostinger's lowest rate needs a 48-month prepayment and renews higher. Wix, Squarespace and WordPress.com include a domain for the first year only.
Booking and local selling
Service businesses need appointments; shops with a counter need in-person payments synced to the online store. Wix covers booking from Core, Square covers the counter.

Pricing

Prices were checked on 17 October 2026 on each vendor's own pricing page: Wix plans, Squarespace pricing, Shopify pricing, Square Online plans, WordPress.com pricing, Hostinger Website Builder, Webflow pricing and Framer pricing. All figures are US dollars on annual billing unless the row says otherwise.

The first plan that accepts payments costs $0 on Square Online, $96 a year on WordPress.com Premium, and the same yearly amount on Wix Core, Squarespace Core and Shopify Basic, which makes those three a straight fight on features. Squarespace Basic is cheaper at $228 a year but adds a 2% commerce fee, so Core becomes the cheaper plan once store sales pass $6,000 a year.

For a team of five editors, nothing changes on WordPress.com Premium (unlimited users), Wix Core (5 collaborators) or Squarespace Core (unlimited contributors). The bill rises to $1,068 a year on Shopify Grow (Basic has no staff accounts) and $1,080 on Framer Basic with four extra design editors.

Methodology: we compared 8 builders a small business would shortlist, priced the plan that covers payments or booking, then modeled two scenarios from published rates only: five editors, and $36,000 a year of online sales in $60 orders. Ranking is by fit for a business of one to ten people, not by price alone.

Mistakes to avoid
×Buying the cheapest tier and finding it cannot take money. Wix Light, Webflow Basic and WordPress.com Personal do not accept payments, so the real starting price is the next plan up.
×Ignoring seats until launch week. Shopify Basic has no staff accounts and Squarespace Basic stops at two contributors, so a team of five lands on a pricier plan than the owner budgeted.
×Comparing intro prices with annual prices. Hostinger's $2.99 rate needs a 48-month prepayment, and the monthly-billed versions of Squarespace and WordPress.com run well above their yearly rates.
Expert tips
→Write down the one job the site must do (book, sell, or inform) before you open a pricing page. The builder that is best at that job is usually the right one, even if a rival is a few dollars cheaper.
→Model your own sales volume. Below about $87,000 a year of online card sales, Square Online Free costs less than Shopify Basic; above it, Shopify's lower rate wins.
→Pay annually once the site is live. Every builder here charges more on monthly billing, so the yearly plan is the cheaper way to keep a site you already know works.

The bottom line

For most small service businesses, Wix Core is the right first plan: booking, payments and enough seats for a team of five. Choose Squarespace Core when design sells the work and more than five people edit. Choose Shopify when products are the business, and Square Online when you already run a Square counter and online sales are modest. WordPress.com is the cheapest way to give a large team edit rights, and Hostinger the cheapest if you will prepay four years.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best website builder for a small business in 2026?

Wix is the best default for a small service business: its Core plan at $29 a month billed yearly includes payments, scheduling and 5 collaborators, checked on wix.com in October 2026. Shopify is better when products are the business, Squarespace when design sells the work, and Square Online when you already take cards in person.

How much does a small business website builder cost per year?

The first plan that accepts payments costs $0 on Square Online Free, $96 a year on WordPress.com Premium, and $348 a year on Wix Core, Squarespace Core or Shopify Basic, all billed annually and checked in October 2026. Card fees come on top and can exceed the subscription once online sales grow.

Which website builder is best for a team of five people?

WordPress.com allows unlimited users on paid plans, so five editors cost nothing extra on Premium. Squarespace Core has unlimited contributors and Wix Core allows exactly 5 collaborators. Shopify needs the Grow plan for 5 staff accounts, and Framer bills each extra editor at $20 a month.

Is Square Online cheaper than Shopify for a small shop?

Yes, up to roughly $87,000 a year of online card sales. Square Online Free has no monthly fee but charges 3.3% plus 30 cents per online payment; Shopify Basic charges 2.9% plus 30 cents plus its yearly subscription. At $36,000 a year in $60 orders, that is about $1,368 on Square versus $1,572 on Shopify.

Is there a free website builder for small business?

Wix, WordPress.com, Webflow and Framer have free plans, but each keeps its own branding or subdomain on the free tier, which few businesses want on a public site. Square Online's free plan is the exception: it runs a real online store with no monthly fee and charges only per sale.

Should a small business use Webflow or Wix?

Wix if the owner edits the site and needs booking or payments built in. Webflow if a designer or agency builds it and the business wants precise layouts and a strong CMS: Basic is $15 a month billed yearly without a CMS, and Premium adds it. Webflow store plans are billed separately.
