OpenAI Buys Glass Imaging for About $300M

TechCrunch (Amanda Silberling, 14 September 2026) reports that OpenAI has bought smartphone camera maker Glass Imaging in a deal worth over $300 million, citing The Wall Street Journal. The company was founded in 2019 in Los Altos, California, and had previously raised about $30 million.

This is a Journal acquisition report relayed by TechCrunch. It is not a confirmed OpenAI or Glass Imaging press release. Neither company has confirmed the purchase publicly, and OpenAI did not immediately respond to TechCrunch's request for comment. The price is "over $300 million" or "about $300 million," not a figure from a filed S-4.

Founders Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop are former Apple engineers who led the team behind Portrait Mode. Their approach uses neural networks to learn individual camera systems and improve images at the moment of capture, not only in a later edit.

SiliconANGLE (Duncan Riley, 14 September 2026) adds that GlassAI is a neural image signal processor that takes raw sensor output in a single pass, tuned to each camera module's point spread function and noise profile. Ordinary pipelines split demosaicing, noise reduction, sharpening, and fusion into separate stages. GlassAI folds those into one network built around one lens and sensor pairing.

The buy sits next to OpenAI's rumored work on phones, earbuds, and companion devices, and next to its 2025 purchase of Jony Ive's io for $6.5 billion. That hardware push is the same company that is winding down its Cursor model contract after a change of control, and that has been in talks with other labs about an AI standards body.

Watch for an OpenAI or Glass Imaging confirmation, and whether GlassAI shows up in any io or companion-device hardware teardown or on a partner phone system-on-chip.
