Nvidia used a GeForce News product post to announce that DLSS 5, the next generation of its AI graphics stack, arrives September 3 at 9pm Pacific Time and makes its debut inside NBA 2K27 from Visual Concepts and 2K. This is a vendor product announcement shipping alongside a new Game Ready Driver, not a third-party benchmark and not a quiet driver note. The headline feature is called 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, and it is gated to a single hardware generation.

What actually ships

DLSS has until now been mostly about resolution: render fewer pixels, then upscale and fill in frames. Neural Rendering adds a different stage on the end of that pipeline. Nvidia describes it as an AI pass that reads the engine's finished frame together with its geometry, texture and lighting buffers, then paints in photoreal lighting, subsurface scattering and finer material detail. It runs alongside the existing tools, Super Resolution, Multi Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction, rather than replacing them.

The gate is the catch. In NBA 2K27, Neural Rendering is limited to GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs and laptops, plus GeForce NOW for Ultimate members on RTX 5080-class cloud rigs. Nothing in this post extends the feature to RTX 40 or 30 cards, so treat it as a 50 Series exclusive until Nvidia says otherwise. Owners of older silicon get the announcement, not the feature.

The numbers are Nvidia's own

Nvidia also put performance figures on the table, and they belong to Nvidia. The company says an RTX 5090 running NBA 2K27 at Ultra with ray tracing and the full DLSS suite reaches up to 370 FPS at 4K and up to 590 FPS at 1440p, with the 5080 near 410, the 5070 Ti near 350 and the 5070 near 260 at 1440p. It also claims it took a dual-RTX-5090 setup from its March demos down to a single GPU for a 5X performance gain in six months. These are marketing figures, not independent tests, and early hands-on previews have read the feature more skeptically than the press deck.

For the studio, the pitch is control rather than raw frames. Developers get knobs for structure and tone intensity, semantic masking and a choice of models; players essentially get an on or off switch. "What's great is the level of control that it gives us," said Peter Kavic, Senior Producer at Visual Concepts, describing a per-pixel uplift control mask used to fine-tune detail on athletes. Nvidia says the models are trained to stay deterministic and temporally stable using engine motion vectors, which is the claim that will make or break the look in fast motion.

How to turn it on

If you have the hardware, switching it on is simple. Install the September 3 Game Ready Driver from the Nvidia app, open Video Settings and enable DLSS Neural Rendering, then use F9 during play or replays to toggle it and see the change. The same neural stack ships as an Nvidia Streamline and Unreal Engine 5 plugin, so NBA 2K27 is the shop window, not the ceiling. It also lands while Nvidia keeps making headlines for its balance sheet, from its $3.5 billion in MediaTek convertible bonds on down, a reminder that the moat is still the software running on RTX cards.

If you own an RTX 50 card, update on September 3 and judge Neural Rendering with your own eyes in motion, because the only performance and quality numbers on offer today are the vendor's. Everyone else should wait for independent benchmarks, and for any sign the feature reaches older GPUs, before reading this launch as a reason to upgrade.
