Google and Cathay trial AI contrail avoidance in Asia
Google Research is trialing AI contrail avoidance with Cathay Pacific, its first Asia airline partner, after more than 80 flights showed a roughly 40 percent estimated drop in contrail warming impact. The Hong Kong to Singapore corridor accounted for more than half of the trial's emissions reductions.

Google Research is partnering with Cathay Pacific to test AI-powered contrail avoidance on ultra-long-haul flights in the Asia-Pacific region. The 7 September 2026 Google Research blog names Cathay as Google's first commercial airline partner in Asia for this work.
This is a research blog announcing an operational trial expansion. It is not a new commercial product SKU, and it is not a regulated emissions mandate.
Contrails form when aircraft fly through cold, humid air. Google says they account for roughly one-third of aviation's total climate impact.
The system combines AI predictions, satellite imagery, and weather intelligence, then feeds dispatchers and the cockpit through in-flight Wi-Fi and Cathay's Electronic Flight Folder. Altitude shifts are slight, stay inside existing safety parameters, and are not expected to affect passengers. Ultra-long-haul here means routes lasting more than 16 hours, often spanning 13,000 kilometers (8,000 miles) or more.
More than 80 flights followed contrail-avoidance routes. Google's satellite imagery analysis estimates those legs cut the warming impact of contrails by roughly 40 percent. The operational trial targeted more than 100 flights across Cathay's network.
The Hong Kong to Singapore corridor was among the routes tested. Analysis from the trial indicates interventions on that single route account for more than 50 percent of the trial's total emissions reductions.
Those reduction figures are Google's satellite-imagery estimates from the trial. They are not a regulator-certified climate claim. Google is now scaling a larger second phase with Cathay and partnering with Contrails.org, a nonprofit focused on contrail science.
Aviation operations already move on thin safety and weather margins, as Sunday's Amazon Air overrun at Miami showed. Asia infrastructure rules are tightening at the same time, including Thailand's pause on 166 data-center projects. This trial is another AI system going live in operations, closer to Waymo's public robotaxi openings than to a device-hardening story such as the US military disabling ad trackers.
If you dispatch or buy carbon work on Cathay or other ultra-long-haul Asia routes, treat the 40 percent figure as a Google satellite estimate from a still-running trial, not an offset you can book. Watch the Hong Kong to Singapore corridor for most of the measured effect, and wait for phase 2 plus Contrails.org data before you change fleet altitude policy.
