Pentagon talks $5B Fluidstack loan for AI data center supply

Reuters, citing the Wall Street Journal, says the Pentagon is in talks to lend about $5 billion to Fluidstack through the Office of Strategic Capital. The money would fund U.S. manufacturing of data-center components, not a new campus, and neither DoD nor Fluidstack confirmed the report.

Pentagon talks $5B Fluidstack loan for AI data center supply

Reuters (Carlos Mendez, 10 September 2026) said the Pentagon is in talks to lend about $5 billion to AI cloud-computing startup Fluidstack. The report cites the Wall Street Journal and people familiar with the matter.

This is a Reuters write-up of anonymous-source WSJ reporting. It is not a Department of Defense press release, not a closed loan, and not a Fluidstack filing. The U.S. Department of Defense and Fluidstack did not immediately respond to Reuters for comment.

The money would come from the Pentagon's Office of Strategic Capital. Fluidstack would use it to shore up the U.S. data-center supply chain and manufacturing capacity for certain data-center-related components, rather than to fund a new AI facility outright.

Amount, terms, and approval are still unsettled. Treat the $5 billion figure as the size of the talks the Journal's sources described, not as cash that has been approved or wired.

The Office of Strategic Capital has prior deals with rare-earth companies Vulcan Elements, Phoenix Tailings, and Energy Fuels, Reuters noted, plus funding for drone companies including Unusual Machines and Sequoia-backed Neros, which the Journal had reported earlier.

Related capacity and hardware tape includes the House Ratepayer Protection Act on data-center power costs, Anthropic's model hardware standard, Anthropic's enterprise frontier safeguards, and the CISA advisory on China AI distillation.

If you model Fluidstack capacity or U.S. data-center siting, book this as Office of Strategic Capital loan talks aimed at component manufacturing, not a funded new campus, and wait for DoD or Fluidstack to confirm terms before treating $5 billion as committed.
