Trump Hosts Anthropic's Amodei for Private Dinner After Months of Military AI Hostility

Two weeks ago, Donald Trump was mocking Dario Amodei on Truth Social. On Sunday evening, the Anthropic CEO was due at the White House for a private dinner with the president, according to a person familiar with the plans who spoke to Politico.

It would be the first one-on-one meeting between the two men. After months of open hostility between the administration and one of America's most valuable AI companies, the dinner reads as an attempt at a thaw.

From "perfect little angel" to the dinner table

The mood music has been bad for a long time. On September 14, Trump posted that Amodei was pretending to be a "perfect little angel" over AI regulation, a jab at Anthropic's habit of calling for rules the White House does not want.

Amodei was also missing from the White House during the week of the Xi Jinping summit, when other tech leaders crowded into the building. Business Insider notes the timing of the dinner too: it lands days before Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson meet AI executives on Tuesday.

A White House official framed the evening in broad terms, saying America will lead in "Super Intelligence" while protecting consumers. Nobody has promised a deal.

The Pentagon fight still hangs over it

The real friction is military. Anthropic put limits on how Claude could be used for autonomous killing and mass surveillance, and Pentagon officials responded by calling it "woke AI." In late February the Defense Department labeled Anthropic a supply-chain risk, a label that marks it as a risk to defense supply chains.

Last week an appeals court upheld the designation, which means Amodei sits down with Trump having just lost in court.

Nothing reported so far suggests the dinner lifts that blacklist, restores defense contracts or produces a joint policy statement. It is a meal, not a settlement.

Two very different views of the frontier

The philosophical gap is wide. Amodei has argued that "we must pace the frontier," building AI with deliberate guardrails. Trump has called the public backlash against AI a hoax and promised that nothing will slow the industry's growth.

Gizmodo put it bluntly, describing the evening as one of those "cursed" one-on-one dinners tech CEOs now take with the president. TechCrunch framed it the same way, as a meeting that follows months of open conflict.

For Anthropic, the stakes are concrete. The court route just failed, and Tuesday's industry meeting will show whether Sunday's dinner bought it a seat at the table or just a nicer tone.
